Your Search Traffic Is Dropping: Here's Why and What to Do About It

A dimly lit workspace with a laptop displaying a downward-trending analytics chart, highlighted by a magnifying glass. A notebook, coffee mug, plant, and printed reports surround the laptop, conveying analysis of declining website performance and search traffic.

Marketers!!!!! I see you.

You opened Google Search Console this morning. You looked at the clicks graph. And where you used to see 1,000 clicks a day, you are now seeing 500.

I understand the loss. Genuinely. That traffic took years to build. And watching it drop without changing a single thing feels unfair, because in a sense, it is.

But let me tell you what is actually happening. And more importantly, what you need to do about it.

Because the marketers who adapt fast are the ones who will survive this. The ones who do not, I will be honest with you, are going to go down and if you are down atleast learn what's going on to explain to the stakeholders.

Why Is Your Search Traffic Dropping?

The honest answer is AI Overviews.

Google's AI Overviews now appear on 48% of all searches. And when they appear, they eat your clicks.

According to Seer Interactive's study of 5.47 million tracked queries and 2.43 billion impressions, organic CTR on queries with an AI Overview present sits at 0.61%, compared to 1.62% on queries without one. That is a 61% compression in click-through rate.

Would you believe it? You could be ranking number one, position one, the holy grail, and if an AI Overview appears above you, only 8% of users click any organic result at all. Without an AI Overview, that number is 15%. One SERP feature, and your position one is worth half what it used to be.

Ahrefs confirmed it from a different angle, analysing 300,000 keywords, they found that the top-ranking page's CTR fell by 58% when an AI Overview was present. Position one CTR has dropped from 39.8% in 2022 to 27.6% in 2026. By 2027, it is expected to settle at 22 to 25%.

If your clicks have halved, this is why. And the important thing to understand is: it is not your fault. It is structural. Google changed the game.

Is Your CTR Drop Normal or a Problem?

Here is something I want you to hear clearly: a CTR drop right now is expected. If your Search Console is showing lower CTR on your high-performing informational content, that is not automatically a red flag. That is the new normal.

The ones that will hurt you are the informational queries, the general "how to," "what is," "why does" questions that used to drive volume. AI Overviews eat those. They grab the answer from your page, surface it directly, and the user never has to click. Your content did the work. Google took the traffic.

Check your Search Console right now. Filter by your highest-impression informational pages. I guarantee the CTR will be low. That is AI Overviews doing exactly what they were built to do.

The pages that are more protected? Niche content. Research-backed pieces. Content with original data, your own surveys, your own analysis, internal company data, FOI requests, proprietary findings. AI Overviews cannot synthesise what does not exist elsewhere on the internet. If you own the data, you own the citation.

What Google Is Actually Rewarding Right Now

Let me be direct about this, because too many marketers are still optimising for 2021.

Google has started prioritising sites with strong site-level authority, not just page-level quality. What that means in practice is backlinks matter more than ever. But not any backlinks. Authoritative, relevant backlinks from publications and sites that Google already trusts.

And I want to be clear on something that trips people up. Domain Authority, the Moz score everyone references, is not a Google metric. Google uses its own internal siteAuthority signal, confirmed in the 2024 API leak. But the two move together because they are both built on the same thing: quality backlinks from relevant, credible sources.

One backlink from a respected industry publication is worth more than a hundred from random blogs. Quality over quantity. Every time.

There is also a tough era coming for journalists, and I think it is worth saying directly. Google is increasingly rewarding brands that produce their own original research, their own data, their own studies. Journalists have historically been the ones breaking stories and producing data that everyone else cites. That role is now being competed for by smart marketing teams who run their own surveys, file their own FOIs, publish their own annual reports. If you want authoritative backlinks, create something authoritative enough to earn them.

The Three Most Important Signals Google Is Reading Right Now

Here is the simplest way I can explain what Google is actually doing in 2026, and this is important, so stay with me.

Google is building a picture of your brand from three directions simultaneously.

Authoritative backlinks tell Google: yes, X brand did this research, published this content, and other credible sources trust them enough to reference it. Think of it like a human phenomenon, the more respected people talk about you, the more central you become. One mention from the right person changes how an entire room perceives you. Backlinks work exactly the same way.

Reputation management platforms: Google Business Profile, Trustpilot, G2, and similar sites, tell Google: this brand has actual customers, they provide actual services, and here is what those customers genuinely think. According to BrightLocal's 2026 consumer review survey, 97% of consumers read online reviews for local businesses. And 74% only trust reviews from the last three months, recency matters as much as rating. Google reads these platforms as external validation that you are a real, active, trusted business.

Your own website following E-E-A-T principles tells Google: we are X brand, this is what we do, this is who we are, this is our expertise. Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trust but as signals woven into your content, your author bios, your About pages, your sources, your original data, your firsthand observations.

When all three are working together, the signal Google gets is coherent and mutually reinforcing. Other credible sources vouch for you. Customers validate you on trusted third-party platforms. And your own site demonstrates why both are warranted.

That is the whole game right now. Simple, but not easy.

What You Need to Do Differently Right Now

Here is the practical bit.

Stop measuring success by raw clicks alone. This is the single biggest mindset shift needed. Clicks are down across the board on informational content. If you are reporting to a client or a board using the same KPIs you used two years ago, you are going to misread what is actually happening. Separate your query data by intent, informational, transactional, navigational, and track CTR trends within each segment separately. Sitewide average CTR is almost meaningless now.

Shift content investment toward owned data. Survey your customers. Analyse your internal sales data. File FOI requests for public sector data in your sector. Commission research. Produce an annual report. Create content that AI cannot summarise from elsewhere on the internet, because the source is you. That content earns citations, earns backlinks, and earns authority that compounds.

Get on reputation platforms now not later. If you are not actively collecting reviews on Google Business Profile, Trustpilot, or sector-relevant platforms, start this week. Not because of the stars, because Google reads them as trust signals. A high rating combined with a volume of detailed, recent reviews strengthens your brand signal in Google's algorithm. A drop in sentiment, conversely, is a warning flag. This has always mattered. In 2026, it matters more.

Earn authoritative backlinks through digital PR. Platforms like Featured.com and Qwoted connect you with journalists who need expert sources. A mention or link from a respected publication carries more SEO weight than months of on-page optimisation on a site with no authority behind it. Create something worth citing, then make sure the right people know it exists.

Apply E-E-A-T properly to your landing pages. Google forgave a lot before. It is not forgiving it now. Author credentials on blog posts. Transparent About pages. Clear business information. Original insights rather than recycled summaries. First-person expertise. Real data. If your landing pages and key content do not demonstrate who you are and why you should be trusted, Google will not rank them ahead of sites that do.

The Brands That Are Actually Winning Right Now

Here is the counterintuitive finding buried in the same data that shows all the CTR decline.

Brands that are cited inside AI Overviews earn 35% more organic clicks and 91% more paid clicks than brands sitting in position one below the AI answer. The difference between being cited and being bypassed is not just visibility, it is a 91% uplift in paid performance on the same query.

The brands winning are not the ones who found a loophole. They are the ones who built genuine authority, real backlinks, real reviews, real original content, real E-E-A-T signals, and became the sources Google's AI trusts enough to cite.

That is what you are building toward. It takes longer than a quick fix. But it compounds in a way that quick fixes never do.

So. Adapt.

I know it is frustrating. I know you built something real and watching the numbers drop feels like the ground shifted without warning. Because it did.

But here is the truth: the era of ranking well by producing slightly better versions of what already exists is over. Google is not going to reverse AI Overviews. Zero-click search is not going to reverse. The shift is structural and it is permanent.

What is not permanent is your current approach. That you can change.

Own your data. Build your authority. Earn your reputation. Follow E-E-A-T properly. Do the things that are hard to replicate, because those are the only things that still create durable, defensible visibility in 2026.

Go ahead. Adapt. And shine my marketers.

Quick Reference: The 2026 SEO Survival Checklist

Lower CTR on informational content: Expected, not automatically a problem Informational queries: Most exposed to AI Overview impact, shift to original data Backlinks: Quality over quantity, one strong link beats a hundred weak ones Reputation platforms: Google Business Profile, Trustpilot, G2: start collecting reviews now E-E-A-T on landing pages: Author credentials, original data, transparent business info, non-negotiable Being cited in AI Overviews vs bypassed: 35% more organic clicks, 91% more paid clicks KPI shift needed: Track CTR by query intent segment, sitewide average is now misleading
