B2B Buyers Are Researching Vendors on AI Tools: Is Your Brand Showing Up?

I broke down the basics of this shift in the video above, how AI agents are now doing vendor research on behalf of buyers, and what that means for your website. If you prefer to read, or want the fuller picture with data and specific actions, everything is below.

Let me tell you something that should genuinely change how B2B marketing teams think about visibility.

Your potential customers are typing your category into ChatGPT. Right now. Before they visit your website. Before they read your case studies. Before they speak to sales. And if your brand is not in the answer, you are not on the shortlist.

This is not a trend to watch. It is already embedded behaviour. And most B2B brands are not showing up.

Why Are B2B Buyers Using AI to Research Vendors?

Think about how a B2B purchase used to start. Someone on a buying team would sit down, Google the category, open ten tabs, and manually compare everything

.

That first step is changing.

Increasingly, buyers are opening ChatGPT or Perplexity instead and typing something like: "find me the top project management tools for a fifty-person team and compare their pricing." The AI does the research, synthesises the options, and hands back a shortlist in minutes.

Forrester's 2026 Buyers' Journey Survey of nearly 18,000 global business buyers found 94% used AI during their most recent purchase. 55% compared vendors in AI tools, 54% researched products, and 47% built internal business cases, all before any vendor contact.

Would you believe it? Nearly half of B2B buyers are building an internal business case, typically a document shared across a buying committee, using AI tools, before a single conversation with any vendor has happened. The deal is being shaped in a system your sales team has no visibility into and no ability to influence through traditional outreach.

What Does an AI Agent Actually Do When It Researches Vendors?

This is where most people misunderstand what is happening.

An AI agent is not just a chatbot answering one question. It is a tool that goes out, searches multiple websites, compares them, and completes a task on its own. In this case, that task is: build me a vendor shortlist.

So instead of the buyer visiting your website directly, an AI visits it on their behalf. And decides, based on what it finds, whether you are worth showing to the buyer at all.

It is looking for the same things a busy human would want, just faster. Clear pricing, instead of "contact us for a quote." Clear comparisons, how you differ from competitors. Proof of legitimacy, case studies, reviews, real results. And all of that written in plain text, not hidden inside a video or a downloadable brochure the AI cannot read.

If that information is not there in plain text, many agents simply move on to a competitor who made it easy.

Is This Actually Happening Yet, or Is It Still Early?

It is already happening. Especially for software and service businesses, the kind of purchases people are used to comparing online.

And it tends to happen with your busiest, most serious buyers first. The ones with the least time to manually compare ten vendors, and the most reason to let an AI do the first pass for them.

69% of buyers indicated they chose a different software vendor than they initially planned based on AI chatbot guidance. One third purchased from a vendor they had never heard of before.

That last number is the most important one. One in three B2B buyers ended up purchasing from a brand they had never previously encountered, discovered entirely through an AI search answer. The buying journey does not begin where B2B marketers have historically assumed it does.

The Gap That Should Concern Every B2B Marketer

Here is the number that tells the whole story.

51% of B2B tech brands have zero citations across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini.

Over half of all B2B technology brands are completely invisible in the AI tools their buyers are actively using to research, compare, and shortlist vendors. Not underperforming. Invisible.

66% of buyers say they have spotted vendors absent from AI results. 26% say this happens frequently.

And what happens when a buyer notices a vendor is absent? 85% think more highly of a software vendor when an AI chatbot mentions them. Four out of five say AI chatbots accelerated their purchasing decision.

The inverse is also true. Absence from AI answers is increasingly interpreted as a credibility signal in itself. If ChatGPT does not know who you are, some buyers will wonder why.

Why Are Most B2B Brands Missing This?

Only 22% of marketers currently track AI visibility. Fewer than 26% plan to develop content specifically for AI citations.

The measurement gap is the root cause. B2B marketing teams are tracking website traffic, lead volume, MQL conversion rates, and pipeline attribution. They are not tracking where they appear, or fail to appear, in AI-generated answers. And because they are not measuring it, they are not acting on it.

Traditional attribution captures only about 27% of the B2B buyer journey. The other 73% happens in dark funnel channels with no trackable signal.

AI research is the biggest dark funnel channel of 2026. The buyer who typed "best CRM for a fifty-person professional services firm" into Perplexity, got a shortlist of five vendors, and never clicked a single website, that buyer exists in none of your analytics. They are forming preferences about your brand in a system you cannot see, using answers you did not write.

What Does Your Website Need to Do Differently?

Your website now has two audiences. The human who eventually reads it, and the AI agent that decides whether that human ever gets to.

Here is what that means practically:

Put your pricing where people — and AI — can actually see it. "Contact us for a quote" is easy for an AI to skip past. If your pricing is not visible in plain text, you are not in the comparison. I know pricing transparency feels uncomfortable for a lot of B2B businesses. But the alternative is not being on the shortlist at all.

Build a real comparison page.

Show honestly how you differ from your main competitors. AI agents are actively looking for this content when building shortlists. A comparison page written clearly in plain text is one of the highest-leverage pages you can add to a B2B website right now.

Put your proof in text, not just images or video.

Case studies, results, client outcomes, reviews, written out, not just presented as graphics or embedded videos the AI cannot read. If your social proof only lives in a testimonial carousel, it is invisible to the agent deciding your shortlist eligibility.

Answer the obvious buyer questions directly on your site.

The questions you answer on every sales call, write those out on your website. If someone is asking ChatGPT about your category, these are the queries you need to be the source for.

What Determines Whether Your Brand Gets Cited?

AI citation visibility is buildable. It is not random.

Brand mentions on trusted third-party sources matter more than backlinks for AI citation. Ahrefs' analysis of 76 million AI Overviews found brand mentions correlate 0.664 with AI citation probability versus backlinks' 0.218, a 3x gap. For B2B specifically: G2, Capterra, Trustpilot, specialist trade press, and sector-specific forums are the places that feed this signal.

Review platform presence is now a citation signal directly. ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini all read G2 and Capterra when synthesising vendor comparisons. A well-populated, actively maintained review profile on these platforms feeds directly into how AI tools characterise your product when asked to compare options. If your G2 or Trustpilot profile has fewer than 20 recent reviews, that is the most immediate, highest-leverage action available to you right now.

Topical authority through content clusters. AI engines prefer sources that demonstrate genuine depth on a subject. A connected cluster of useful content around your core category builds the signal that makes your brand trustworthy enough to cite. What Should UK B2B Marketers Do Right Now?

Three things, in order.

Start measuring AI visibility this week.

Test your category keywords manually in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews right now. Type the queries your buyers would type. Note who gets cited. Note where you appear, if at all. Do this weekly. Document it. That is your AI visibility baseline, and it takes ten minutes.

Audit your website the way an AI agent would. Is your pricing actually visible? Could someone compare you to a competitor without emailing you first? Are your case studies and results written in plain text? If the answer to any of those is no, that is exactly where to start. The businesses that fix this now, before everyone else catches on, are the ones that will still be getting picked when the buyer never even talks to a salesperson.

Fix the review platform gap. An under-maintained G2 or Trustpilot profile is a citation gap and a conversion gap simultaneously. AI tools read these platforms. Your buyers read these platforms. Both audiences need to find something credible there.

The first step of B2B buying is quietly shifting. It used to start with a person browsing. Now, for a growing number of buyers, it starts with an AI doing the research first.

That is not something to panic about. It just means your website needs to convince a machine. clearly and honestly — before it ever gets the chance to convince a person.
